Cannabis Growers Shift Attention to Technology

Cannabis growers like all agriculture professionals understand the value of data and the importance of staying on technologies forefront. As growers continue to entrust the health and well being of their crop with smart controllers and remote monitoring, the race is now a matter of cultivation efficiency. This is one of many reasons The Ohio Wellness Project in Dayton Ohio caught the attention of JAIN. With the many stigmas revolving around the cannabis industry it was reassuring to see a typically conservative state lean towards a progressive crop.

On our initial visit to the facility, previously the Budweiser production and distribution headquarters for central Ohio, reality set in. The entire property was being converted into a top of the line indoor cannabis cultivation operation. With over 20,000 square feet of cultivation space, the owners still had a lot to accomplish before any greenery existed. One of the owner's, as you’ll see in the new video short we've produced, is Chris Pearson.

Chris and his son Justin, an advanced botany major from the University of British Columbia moved to central Ohio to bring products to market that help ailing patients manage medical conditions that include Alzheimer's, cancer, Crohn’s disease, anorexia, epilepsy, glaucoma, Nausea, multiple sclerosis, and pain.

Over the last couple of months, JAIN continued to check in on the team in Ohio to see how their progress is coming along. Along with common building standards, the Ohio Wellness team has worked closely with government officials to make sure they not only comply with new government regulations but also exceed them. We learned that along with the Pearson's, the Ohio state government and local entities are also "learning as they go."

Partnering with quality manufacturers on a project of this scale is paramount to the success of the initiative. Chris and Justin worked closely with JAIN and other industry professionals to make sure the plants and the facility were getting what they needed to provide the proper amount of water and nutrients daily. The decision to use pressure compensating Octa-Bubbler manifolds paired with the right valves and filters was determined based on the micro-dosing nature of the feeding schedule prepared in advance. Applying the right amount of water was a priority, and reducing flood risks in the event of a break was also a priority.

For a controller, The Ohio Wellness team turned to the experts at ETwater. ETwater controllers, while typically used on outdoor landscape applications had a particular crossover use for the team, the ability to schedule and monitor remotely. Justin, the leading grower on the project, has a complex formula sometimes containing more than 8 nutrients. This formula is applied in microdoses and extends throughout the day and night. While the schedule can be monitored remotely, the ability to pull detailed flow reports helps ensure that nutrients are not unbalanced and water is not being wasted.

Once all the components were installed, the JAIN team went back to check on the facility and see how things turned out. On our last visit earlier this year we found lush rooms of green and yields far greater than what was originally estimated. Canopies are consistent, and quality is among the best in the country. The Ohio Wellness project couldn't be happier with the products and quality JAIN support provided.
